Murrells Inlet, SC

Murrells Inlet is known by the locals as a small fishing village and by others as the "Seafood Capital of South Carolina". Believed to have received its name by the listing of the Murrell family on the first maps is the most credible explanation of the origin of Murrells Inlet but it wasn't until 1913 that the post office officially gave this town the name Murrells Inlet. The town is only a total of 7.3 square miles. Known for serving fresh local seafood at the restaurants that line the waterways marsh. You can walk the half mile long marsh walk venturing from restaurant to restaurant enjoying the views of the water and the smells of the salt air. Murrells Inlet first started as a rice plantation area but after several hurricanes following the Civil War the uprooted trees and flood damaged dikes ultimately ended the production of rice along the Waccamaw neck. During the Civil War period the Wachesaw landing played a major role for the community allowing the delivery and shipping of goods such as mail, cotton and passengers to the Waccamaw neck. Most passengers who were traveling to or from the Georgetown and Conway area would get to this point and then take a horse and buggy or oxen cart along the long bumpy dirt roads that lined the waterways. As a result of people moving to the area fishing became the main source of income for folks.

Murrells Inlet now has become more developed since those days but still has surrounded its lifestyle and atmosphere around the waters. Several homes, restaurants and business have landed along the waterway. Living on the marsh allows you easy access to the water and beautiful views. You can enjoy having lunch or dinner over looking the waterways from a seat inside or a deck outside. Nothing is better more relaxing then enjoying a day at the marsh walk. Murrells Inlet also offers a public boat landing for anyone who would like to enjoy a day on the water! Summer months are more upbeat in the area as locals and tourist flock to enjoy hanging out waterside with fresh air and plenty of live entertainment!
