Georgetown, SC

 Georgetown sc was founded in 1729, located between Charleston and Myrtle Beach its known as third oldest city in South Carolina. Georgetown got its name when the town was named for George, Prince of Wales, who later became King George II. Georgetown was known best for two commodity crops which included cultivating Indigo as there main source and rice crops as there secondary source. Several years later the rice crop took over and in 1840 Georgetown was known for producing nearly one-half of the United States total rice crop. Making this the largest rice-exporting port in the world! Besides being a historic seaport georgetown was also home to the east Coasts largest Lumber company called Atlantic Coast Lumber Company from 1903 to 1932 when it declared bankruptcy and georgetown went into a economic decline. Thanks to the International Paper Company who built there first plant in georgetown in 1936 things started to turned around. With the international Paper Mill still in place in Georgetown it has supplied thousands of jobs to many of georgetowns locals keeping this town alive!

 Plantation Homes

Georgetown is home to several old plantaions. Plantation Homes are now a unique way to living in a part of history. Several Plantations have been developed into small home communities some with golf courses and some have kept the true historical feel. Some plantations have opted to the keep what resembles the origional look by not changing much on the homes, "slave" houses or old architecture remains. Most of georgetowns platations are surrounded by several bodies of waters like the Black River, the Pee Dee, Waccamawa river, Intercoastal Waterway and the Winyah bay. Some may use there land as a source of income to lease to others for different recreactional purposes such has hunting, fishing, and motor cross tracks.


          Historic District 

Georgetowns historic district was layed out by Elisha Screven around a four by eight grid. Screven Street named after Elisha Screven now is the home of Georgetown's Court house,Treasures office and several law offices. Among the the historic district you will find rebuilt churches of all denominations, shopping, dining, a bed a breakfast and locals homes. The homes in the historic district are more of your original Georgian style and traditional low country style homes with large front porches, wood floors, fire places, formal dining rooms, stucco siding and brick siding.
